Westvleteren has the smallest output of the Trappist breweries, with only a small part of their production going very far into the world.
"This Trappist, also referred to as the Flemish Burgundy, has a dark amber colour, a stable, strong lacing and a white head. Westvleteren 12 is a masterpiece in its complexity but wonderful in its simplicity. The exquisite smooth taste of caramel and chocolate goes perfectly well with the sweet raisin and nutty notes in the aroma. Together with the firm alcohol percentage, it results in a pleasant full-bodied, long-lasting and warm aftertaste."-Abbey Saint-Sixtus

Westvleteren...
Unfortunately the bottle I received was off. When I lifed the cap a little bit it continued to fizzle out for the next couple of minutes. What was left in the bottle tasted dreadful. Not asking for compensation just letting u know.
I've had the 12 twice before so I know what it should taste like.

A special bottle
while the price for this bottle is very very steep, it is a great bottle.
full of flavours, remember to drink it at around 15-18 C to appreciate the flavours.
among some of the best Trappist beers.

Wow!
Sure, it’s expensive, but it is a must try for all beer lovers. How could you pass up the opportunity to buy one of, if not the best beer in the world?

At the source
Hubby and I had this ( with the blond and the 8 last week at the cafe attached to the abbey ). The 12 is lovely ( and the St Bernardus 12 is VERY close ). The service was awful but trying the 3 beers right there was awesome. The 12 is dark and deep and rich and thick and sweet ( and I loved but hubby was not convinced ). Would pay tbit fly to Belgium again to try the beer.

Best beer ever.
I can't rate this one high enough, it's a fantastic beer.
It is so smooth, so nice tasting ... it's unbelievable. I can't get my head around how did these guys brew something so magnificent. :)

Interesting
I've tried this beer once and I need to do it again some day. I found it a beer that smelled a bit better than it tasted. But I'll try the St Bernardus first before going back to the Westy again.

OK its nice but way overpriced. The St Bernardus 12 or Rochefort 10 are near identical
Its a nice beer with an almost deserved reputation. For a special event or for the beer snob in your life.

You have to do it once in your life!
Cheaper than a flight to Belgium at least! As much as I love St Bernardus 12 or Rochefort 10 (as per other review), Westvleteren 12 is something that little bit more special (if only for the rarity)
